New York City is one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world—and chances are it’s on your bucket list to visit at least once! If you haven’t made the trip yet, check out the newest season of Relatos en inglés, all about the Big Apple.

Relatos en inglés is a Duolingo podcast that invites intermediate English learners in Latin America to practice their listening comprehension via compelling stories told by real English speakers. Our goal is to give intermediate learners an opportunity to practice and learn about the diverse communities that make up the English-speaking world. After five seasons and 40 episodes, we decided New York City deserved its own season! This will be our first-ever themed season for our Relatos podcast!

Why did we decide to go deep on NYC?

Here at Duolingo, we believe that learning is most effective when you're interested in and excited about what you're learning, and sometimes, one episode isn’t enough to fully explore a topic! With over 8 million people from all over the globe speaking over 700 languages, New York City is one of the world’s most vibrant and multicultural cities. And what’s more exciting than hearing about the stories and people that make up this bustling city?

When deciding on this season’s theme, we took our listeners into consideration. Duolingo learners study English for a variety of reasons, and we know that many of our podcast listeners are learning English to travel, learn about different cultures, work, or study abroad. From where to get the best pizza slice to subway etiquette, in this special season of Relatos en inglés, we will feature stories that are relevant to anyone who aspires to travel to, work in, or live in NYC.

Duo as the Statue-of-Liberty

A peek inside the season

What can you expect from our NYC-themed season? We’ll highlight everything from iconic monuments, like the Statue of Liberty, to vibrant neighborhoods, like Chinatown and Washington Heights.

But one of our favorite episodes follows two women moving to the city for the first time— a subject we think some listeners might relate to! In the first part of this episode we meet Rebecca Alaniz: she grew up in a small town in Texas never pictured moving to a big city… until she left for NYC to pursue a dream career in fashion. Meanwhile, in the state of Maine, Connie Ottmann had always wanted to move to NYC, and at age 67, Connie packed up her life to start fresh in New York! Listen along as these two women share their experiences of moving to the Big Apple in pursuit of their dreams.
