Not many people can say an education app helped them get a second chance at romance. Enter Daryl and Alexa, who reconnected on Duolingo after their first few dates didn’t quite work out. We asked them to share more about their story, and buckle up, because it’s pretty epic.
First comes friendship…
Daryl and Alexa met on a dating app back in 2022. They went on a handful of dates, but decided the spark wasn’t quite there and they stayed friends instead. They kept in touch through social media, the way exes-who-never-really-were often do.
That’s where Duolingo enters the picture. Daryl noticed Alexa was keeping up her Spanish practice on the app, and something about it nudged him to open Duolingo again himself after a couple of years away. He had an upcoming trip to Colombia and figured brushing up on his Spanish couldn’t hurt.
Encouragement can be a love language!
Once they were both actively learning, Daryl and Alexa started connecting through Duolingo the way so many friends do: cheering each other on, keeping up a Friend Streak, and teaming up for Friends Quests. It was low-stakes and easy—just two friends learning Spanish side by side.
Then, in 2024, everything shifted. Daryl posted an Instagram story about practicing his Spanish while at a local market. Alexa saw it and suggested they check out a language exchange café in their city together. That hangout reignited something neither of them expected. Suddenly, the friendship that had cooled off after those first dates was warming right back up… for real this time. 💘
From amigos to novios
Once they officially started dating again, Duolingo remained a key daily ritual of their relationship. Daryl and Alexa have maintained an ongoing 800+-day Friend Streak, and they’re intentional about picking each other for Friends Quests every week. They’ve even put their Spanish to work in real life, choosing a vacation in Barcelona so they could practice their skills!
Daryl remembers joking with friends about Duolingo being a good place to meet someone. “And then we re-met on Duolingo!”
Indeed, some of their friends signed up for Duolingo themselves, in hopes of finding their own happily-ever-after.
A fairytale ending
On September 12 this year, Daryl and Alexa tied the knot!
“We’re grateful that Duolingo was a central part of our relationship and essentially brought us back together,” Daryl said. “I can honestly say that without Duolingo, we would not be reconnected, engaged, and now married.”
For Alexa, it’s personal in a different way, too. “It’s a special place in my heart, being able to learn español, but at the same time also rekindle a relationship that I thought was dead in the water after a couple of dates,” she said. “You never know—sometimes the Green Owl app can change everything.”
