Pirc Defense: 5 quick facts
- The Pirc Defense, named after Slovenian grandmaster Vasja Pirc, is a hypermodern opening for Black that only gained popularity in the 1950s.
- Although it’s generally considered a solid defense, it’s not very common at the highest levels because it’s relatively passive for Black.
- In the Pirc, Black allows White to control the center and gain a space advantage, which can lead to cramped positions for Black.
- Because the Pirc, like most hypermodern openings, requires strong knowledge of opening principles and can easily backfire, it’s often recommended for intermediate to advanced players.
- The Pirc is similar to the Modern Defense, and either opening may transpose into each other. Black’s Pirc setup is also extremely similar to that in the King’s Indian Defense.
